Laser Hair Removal 101: What to Expect Before Your First Session

Explain the process, prep tips, number of sessions needed, and pain/downtime expectations.

Thinking about trying laser hair removal but not sure what to expect? Here’s what actually happens before, during, and after your first session.

How it works

Laser hair removal targets the pigment in hair follicles with concentrated light, damaging the follicle enough to slow future growth. It works best on hair in its active growth phase, which is why multiple sessions are needed to catch hairs at different stages of the growth cycle.

Before your session

Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for at least two weeks beforehand, as tanned skin increases the risk of irritation. Shave the area 24 hours before your appointment rather than waxing or plucking, since the laser needs the hair root intact under the skin.

During the treatment

Most people describe the sensation as a warm snap, similar to a rubber band flick against the skin. Sessions on smaller areas like the underarms typically take 15–20 minutes, while legs can take longer. Cooling techniques are used throughout to keep you comfortable.

After your session

Mild redness or slight puffiness around the follicles is normal and usually fades within a few hours. Avoid hot showers, saunas, and direct sun for 24–48 hours, and always apply sunscreen to treated areas afterward.

How many sessions will you need?

Most people need 6–8 sessions spaced four to six weeks apart to see significant, lasting reduction, since hair grows in cycles and each session only catches follicles that are active at that time.
