Guide to identifying sensitive skin needs and which facial treatments to avoid or choose.
Sensitive skin doesn’t mean you have to skip facials altogether, it just means being more selective about which treatments and techniques are right for you.
Know your triggers first
Redness, stinging, or breakouts after using new products are common signs of sensitivity. Before your appointment, let your facialist know which products or ingredients have caused reactions in the past.
Opt for gentler exfoliation
Harsh physical scrubs can aggravate sensitive skin. Ask about gentler enzyme-based or very light exfoliation instead, which clears dead skin without the friction of coarse scrubs.
Ask about extraction pressure
If you’re prone to redness, request lighter extraction pressure or ask your facialist to skip particularly stubborn spots rather than pushing through, which can leave sensitive skin inflamed for days.
Prioritise calming, hydrating masks
A soothing mask to finish the treatment helps bring down any redness from cleansing or extractions and leaves sensitive skin feeling calm rather than reactive.
Patch test if trying something new
If you or your facialist want to try a new product or technique, ask for a small patch test first, especially on the inner arm, before it’s applied to your full face.
Space out your visits appropriately
Sensitive skin often needs slightly more recovery time between facials. Every 5–6 weeks is usually gentler than a monthly schedule, but this varies person to person.
